Weather Hound ends the year with another update, adds wide tile support

Weather Hound
Weather Hound is a simple Windows Phone 8 weather app that provides you with the basics on the current weather conditions, an hourly forecast and a seven-day, extended forecast.  You can track the weather based on your current location or set a fixed location in the app’s settings.
Weather Hound was updated today to version 1.2.1 that adds doublewide tile support.  The wider Live Tile displays your current conditions along with a three day, extended forecast.
If you are looking for a minimalistic approach to keeping track of the weather from your Windows Phone, give Weather Hound try.  It may not have all the bells and whistles of other Windows Phone weather apps but it does a good job of covering the basics.
There is a trial version available for Weather Hound with the full version running $.99.  It is available for Windows Phone 8 and you can find Weather Hound here in the Windows Phone Store.

Into the Dead, intense zombie game from iOS and Android now on Windows Phone

Into The Dead
Into the Dead is an intense game. It throws you into a dark field full of zombies and you have to run past them. Do what you have to in order to stay alive. Keep moving and protect yourself by any means necessary. Into the Dead has been available on iOS and Android, but now Windows Phone users can play it, too.
Head past the break to watch our gameplay video.
Before you even start playing a round, we recommend going into the settings for the detail level. You can choose low or high. It works well on the high setting for the Nokia Lumia 1520. Try playing with this setting on your device to see which one works best.
When you start, you’re immediately running forward. The only actions available for you are left, right, and fire. There are four control schemes, so you can choose whichever one is the most comfortable for you. We like the tilting option to move and tapping anywhere on the screen to fire. The other option we like is controlling the directions on the left side while firing on the right side.
Into the Dead screenshot
The zombies don’t appear to be moving fast, but they will grab and bite you if you get too close. If you graze just enough, you will stumble and most likely fall directly into another zombie.
There are crates on the field with weapons and ammo. They are glowing from far away, so you can plan ahead when maneuvering through the zombies. Bullets are limited, so fire only when really necessary.
Into the Dead screenshot
Eventually, you will run into a zombie that kills you. At the end of the round, you get rewarded with coins for the distance. You can spend these coins for perks, but they only last one round. You can pay to start with a gun already in hand, have a head start at 1500m, hold more ammo, or find more weapon crates.
Into the Dead screenshot
Coins can also be used to unlock weapons, zombie packs, or skip missions. Some examples for missions are “jump 3 fences” or  “set distance record without a kill.” Into the Dead can become repetitive, but these missions provide new challenges that make you say, “one more round.”
Don’t have enough coins to unlock what you want? You can spend real money in exchange for coins. For example, 10,000 coins cost 99 cents. The super coin pack with 500,000 coins costs $16.99.
Into the Dead Screenshot
Overall, we like Into the Dead. It’s refreshing from the recent endless runners that have just made their way to the Windows Phone Store. The visuals and sound are great. You’ll hear the player breathing deeply as he runs and you’ll hear zombies when they get close. It’s a horror game, so we’ll understand if you turn off the sound effects or keep the lights on at night.
Into the Dead costs 99 cents at the Windows Phone Store. That’s not a lot, but the game is free on Android and iOS. A free trial is also not available in this initial version, but we still think it’s worth downloading. Go play some rounds and let us know what you think in the comments!

Sneak Peek – FilmOn streaming TV app for Windows Phone 8

FilmOn TV
Yesterday, we reported on a FilmOn TV app for Windows Phone 8 arriving in the coming weeks. The app is based off of the FilmOn streaming site of the same name (FilmOn.com), and it allows users to stream local network TV, in addition to online channels, right to their PC or phone. Up until now, we haven’t had an app for Windows Phone 8, but that is about to change.
FilmOn TV is in an open beta (though you need to register to sign up) and it should be available in the near future as some final bugs and quality testing takes place.
The app, made by developers Charaf Hormi (@charafhormi) and Yassine Serhane (@theLoukt), whom are both Nokia Developer Champions, is highly reflective of the website streaming abilities and so far, looks great. You can see the app in action in our video tour to see what it’s all about.
With the ability to stream FOX, ABC, CBS and other local affiliates, in addition to accessing your free FilmOn TV account, the FilmOn TV app for Windows Phone should be a hit for commuters. Users also have the ability to pin individual stations to their Start screen and even check the TV schedule.
We’ll pass on when FilmOn goes live for general Windows Phone users, but for now, you can enjoy the tour and screenshots.

Nokia Lumia 1520
Living in the Philippines and have been hankering for the largest Windows Phone ever? Today is your lucky day then since the Nokia Lumia 1520 is now available through Nokia Stores. The largest (and most advanced) Windows Phone is now available in one of the most populated Asian countries.
The Lumia 1520 is an impressive phone. It packs a full 1080p display into the 6-inch IPS LCD screen. It’s a big, big phone. But with that extra screen real estate you’re also getting an extra column of Live tiles on your Windows Phone Start screen. On the backside you also have an impressive camera. Photography enthusiasts should be very pleased with the pairing of Nokia Camera and the 20MP PureView sensor. Our friends over at Nokia Revolution have visited two Nokia Stores in the Philippines and have seen the Lumia 1520 available ahead of the official launch. You’ll find it in select Nokia Stores and other retail outlets, but it might be wise to call ahead before showing up at a store that isn’t carrying the Lumia 1520 just yet.
Pricing wise the Lumia 1520 will set you back 30,590 Philippine Pesos (about $688) for an off-contract price. You can, however, also get it through a deferred payment plan by putting 1,600 PhP ($36) down and paying the rest over 24 months with no interest through CitiBank, BPI, BDO and Allied Bank credit cards through the “Buy Now, Pay Later’ program.

Car Starter for Windows Phone 8 becomes Car Dash after the latest update

Car Dash
Car Starter is a dashboard app for Windows Phone 8 that places a decent amount of functionality at your fingertips while on the road.  The app was recently updated to version 2.0 that not only brings about a name change but also a few design changes.
Now known as Car Dash, the version 2.0 update adds a dial pad to the Contacts Page and a music selection feature to the Music Page.  The dial pad will allow you to dial a telephone number directly from the app.  The music selection feature lets you browse through your music collection to find what song you want to listen to.
Car Dash also receives a few tweaks under the hood to improve performance and fix bugs and Podcast Lounge was added to the app shortcut list.
If you are looking for a decent dashboard app for your Windows Phone 8 device, Car Dash is one to consider.  The base app is free with two in-app purchase options.  If you want to unlock the NFC feature, it will cost you $.99.  An hourly and three day weather forecast is available as an add-on for $.99 as well.  You can also bundle both NFC and weather add-ons for $1.49.
You can find Car Dash here in the Windows Phone Store.

Mossad: an augmented reality spy game for Windows Phone

Mossad for Windows Phone 8
Location-based games and mobile are a great fit since smartphones usually have a GPS built in and people take their phones around everywhere. Why not work that into a game, right?
Israel-based developer GreenShpits recently released its own location-based/augmented reality game for Windows Phone 8 called Mossad as part of the AppCampus program. The word “Mossad” means “Institute” in Hebrew and is used to refer to the Israeli equivalent of the CIA. Mossad allows players to travel around playing spy and acting out their own missions, but some major bugs cut into the fun.

Secret agent man

Mossad for Windows Phone 8
Mossad has a fun character customization component in which players dress up their own paper doll-style characters as agents. You can choose between a couple of male and female body types, but not skin color, unfortunately.
To start with, players will only have access to the free clothing and hair styles available. You’ll have to complete missions or make an In-App Purchase in order to get the credits needed for the nicer stuff. Tapping a category of item reveals the stuff for that category, but the menus don’t always like to load – as shown in our hands-on video.

Head to base

Mossad for Windows Phone 8
Between missions, players can head to base by selecting the icon at the bottom of the screen. The base consists of a single grainy panoramic picture, from what I can tell. The player’s boss stands in the middle of the base and provides instructions.
Oddly, the boss’s instructions are too wide for the screen, forcing players to scroll in order to read them. The text can be scrolled up and down, so it’s not “baked in” to the background art…
At the start of the game, there’s nothing else to do at the base. Tapping anywhere just takes you back to the map screen. Presumably, more interactions will unlock as players progress.

Gameplay

Mossad for Windows Phone 8
The core gameplay in Mossad involves finding and completing missions from a map of the player’s real-life surroundings. As you do this, you will (presumably) earn credits and progress through the ranks of the game's spy agency.
After selecting a mission, you’ll read a short description of its objectives. These tend to involve locating or delivering an item or message, from what I’ve seen so far. You then press the camera icon at the right side of the screen and start looking into the camera feed…
Mossad uses augmented reality to hide items and objectives within the environment surrounding the player. You’ll have to watch the camera feed and allow the red arrows that appear on it to guide you to your destination.
After reaching the destination (which can be either close or far, depending on the selected mission), an item should be hovering on-screen somewhere in the vicinity. Line it up dead-center in the camera and tap the screen to complete your objective.

Bugs located

Completing objectives is where things get hairy. I’ve only been able to actually finish a mission once. Every other time, the game either doesn’t recognize that the mission is done, and continues flashing the camera indicator, or it simply crashes. So for me, it’s impossible to progress. See the problem in action in our video above. Maybe you guys will have better luck?
The game has potential. Hopefully the developer can iron things out with the next update.

Zumba Dance comes to Windows Phone 8 with Kinect-like functionality

Zumba Dance
We've reviewed Zumba Fitness World Party for the Xbox One. The popular exercise and fitness game has now made the jump to a smaller screen - Windows Phone. Albeit, it's not the exact same game, but it is from the same developer and the same Zumba series. It's called Zumba Dance and it's now available for Windows Phone 8 devices. Let's check it out.
Head to the Windows Phone Store and you'll see a new game from Majesco Entertainment. Zumba Dance brings one of the most popular dancing franchises to Windows Phone. With it you can expect to get feedback and encouragement while doing full dance routines. That's right. This game uses the front facing camera on your Windows Phone to give you a "Kinect-like" experience. Obviously it's not as accurate as Kinect, but it's pretty cool.
Zumba Dance
Zumba Dance offers rull routines, superstar Zumba instructors like Beto Perez, Gina Grant and Kass Martin. The game also features three hours of available routines with music from artists like LMFAO, Pitbull, Tieso, Kat Deluna, and Sean Paul. There are also original Zumba tracks available.
The game costs $4.99 and gives you a 20-minute workout. From there you can either purchase 3 pre-programmed 60 minute workouts or build your own playlist.
We're not seeing the game in the Windows Store yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a Windows 8 version real soon. In the meantime, you can go to the Windows Phone Store to grab Zumba Dance for Windows Phone. It costs $4.99 and doesn't include a trial. Download clocks in at 172MB, but you will need a phone with 1GB of RAM to play (Sorry Lumia 520 and friends).

Colorblind - a fast paced, reaction-styled game for Windows Phone 8

Colorblind

Colorblind is a fast-paced reaction styled game for Windows Phone 8 that can be deceptively challenging.
The game presents you with a series of colored squares that you have to tap based on directions that appear at the bottom of the game screen.
It sounds easy but you have to tap as many correct squares within sixty seconds.  The more you tap, the higher your score and one wrong move will end the game.  Colorblind will test your concentration, reaction time and is a fun game to pass short bits of time with.  It also has a battle mode where you can challenge a friend head to head.
Colorblind isn't a complicated game for Windows Phone 8 but it can be a challenging gaming option.
Colorblind
Colorblind Main Menu and Game Screens
The main menu for Colorblind has options to jump into a single game or launch the multi-player battle mode.  Additionally you have options to set your player name, view the high scores, view the help screen, turn on/off audio, and turn on/off vibrations running across the bottom of the main menu.
The online battle mode allows you to battle a friend or a random Colorblind player.  The battle mode is still in the Beta stages and it appears that the player base is somewhat slim at the moment (had trouble finding an opponent).
Colorblind
Colorblind Battle Mode Set-up
Game play is, again, simple.  You are presented with four colored squares that are labeled.  At the bottom of the screen, you will be instructed to tap one of the squares and when you tap the square, another direction will appear.  The challenge is that the labels on the colored squares do not always match the color.
You will get instructions to tap the text green or tap the color green.  Playing under the clock if you rush too quickly it is easy to tap the green colored box when you are supposed to tap the box labeled with green text.
Colorblind
Colorblind Game Screen and Round Summary
If you tap the wrong box, the game will end.  However, you have eyes that can be used to save your game and send you back into the action (a mulligan of sorts).  Eyes can be earn, purchased or rewarded for rating the game.  Should the game end, a round summary will be displayed showing your overall gaming stats, the stats for the current game and the top scores from the online leaderboard.
Colorblind is an option to consider if you are looking for a game to help you pass short spurts of time.  Game play is surprisingly challenging and the game has a slight addictive quality.  It is surprising that you can read the instructions one way and your hand will go the exact opposite.
Colorblind is a free, ad-supported game available for Windows Phone 8.  You can find Colorblind here in the Windows Phone Store.

Android 4.3 update for EVO 4G LTE aims for mid-February, exec says

HTC EVO 4G LTE

HTC will be pushing the code to Sprint for review in mid-January, and they expect to have it rolling out to consumers the following month.

Smartphone-controlled plane to soar to CES

Android Central

$50 kit to be available in June

It seems like a lot of different companies are getting in on the smartphone-controlled device game.ARCHOS announced its own series of home regulation devices earlier today. Belkin has its own thingalong the same lines.
Although it's not exactly home automation, Tailor Toys LLC will have a smartphone-controlled device all its own to show off at CES next week. A module contained in the PowerUp 3.0 paper airplane conversion kit will turn a paper plane, which you can make yourself, into a smartphone-controlled beast--at least for ten minutes.
It works through a Bluetooth 4.0/Bluetooth Smart connection and Android 4.3 or higher (and iOS).
A tilt of the phone will control the plane's rudder, allowing steering of the plane. Propeller speed can be adjusted via a touchscreen interface, controlling the plane's altitude. It has a range of 180 feet.
The company launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance the PowerUp 3.0. It has raised almost $840,000 so far.
A 1,000 mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery also comes in the package.
It carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $50 and should be available in June.
Will you be picking up one of these for the kiddos or for kiddos at heart when they're available? Please make your thoughts known in the comments section!

Best Buy offering Nexus 7 for $199 with $25 Google Play credit

Nexus 7 (2013)

Deal available both online and in-store, with Play Store codes sent by email

If you didn't happen to pick up a Nexus 7 during your holiday shopping, Best Buy is running a pretty great sale you may want to take advantage of. You can pick up Google's latest 7-inch tablet for just $199, that's $30 off, and also pick up a $25 Google Play credit in the process. Even if you don't see too much value to the Google Play gift, $30 off an already cheap tablet is nothing to sneeze at.
The sale is active from Best Buy's online store, including free shipping, and we've also heard from a few different folks who have found the deal active in brick-and-mortar stores as well. There's no special coupon code to receive the deal, and it looks as though the Google Play gift will be sent to customers via email. The one unfortunate part of this deal is that it seems to only apply to the 16GB Wifi model, not the higher storage capacity or LTE variants.

Moto X price drops to $399 outright

Moto X

New off-contract pricing applies to custom designs, too, but bamboo will still set you back another Benjamin

Motorola is starting 2014 out right, dropping the outright price of its flagship Moto X Android smartphone to $399. That's still double the price of its budget Moto G offering, but  still less than what most other high-end phones will cost off contract. The new pricing is with 16 gigabytes of storage — 32 GB will set you back another $50.
It's worth noting, however, that you'll still likely be able to get the Moto X even cheaper at some point. Motorola hasn't been shy about putting this guy on sale, and we saw it go for as low as $350 outright in past months.
The new pricing applies to custom-designed phones, as well, but you'll still have to pony up another $100 for the bamboo backs.

Fly Delta app updated to help keep track of SkyMiles status

Fly Delta app
Starting today, those of us who play the frequent flyer game on Delta Air Lines need to keep track of what we're spending in order to make status for 2015. And to that end, Delta has updated its Android app to also show your Medallion Qualification Dollars, aka MQDs. Want to keep status next year? You've got to spend, baby, spend, and not just hop cheap flights to nowhere.
Also new is more detailed profile information, and the requisite bugfixes and performance improvements.
And as a reminder, Delta, like other U.S. airlines, now lets you use your phone or tablet below 10,000 feet. Just don't try to make any calls, m'kay?

Build the city of the future with 2020: My Country for Android

Last week we brought news that Russian gaming giant Game Insight would be bringing its multiplayer combat game Tank Domination to Android early next year. That title will be the publisher’s most hardcore Android release to date. They’re actually best known for city building games.
The cream of Game Insight’s city building crop is 2020: My Country, a sequel to the original My Country. The new game carries over the original’s addictive mixture of serious simulation with free to play mechanics. It also throws in a futuristic touch, with hovercars and aliens populating the city. It’s surprisingly fun, if you like this type of game. Head past the break for our detailed review.

City founder

 2020: My Country
Upon launching the game, players are thrust directly into a tutorial - no title screens here. You begin with a small section of city to call your own. The player’s first order of business is to construct an office building. Everything takes real-time to build, but spending a little energy causes tasks to finish instantly. You shouldn’t run out of energy during the tutorial phase, so just hurry things along.
Having erected the building, you’ll need to hire an entrepreneur to run the place. But you can’t just hire a building manager outright. First you’ll need to collect a handful of resources that the professional will need – in this case, a cell phone, briefcase, and folder. To get these and other items, just hop over to one of your other buildings and complete a task. Materials randomly drop after finishing these short tasks, so you might need to repeat the process a few times until you get the goods.
After hiring a professional to run the building, players can then select contracts for the business to work on. Initially you’ll have only one contract duration to choose from, but raising a business’s star rating will unlock longer and higher paying contracts. Sometimes you have to buy extra vehicles too, such as fire trucks for the fire station. Whenever the contract wraps up, collect the money it produces and start a new one.

Making money and progress

2020: My Country
Other types of edifices such as residential buildings just produce money on their own schedules with no need to choose a contract. After reaching level 6 (the end of the tutorial), players can perform short tasks at any building at any time in hopes of finding materials – or just to earn extra money. Collecting money from any building also causes a VTOL aircraft to come along and drop XP and more money for the picking.
Perform a building’s tasks enough times to raise the place’s star rating and earn a free spin at the upgrade wheel. Depending on where the wheel lands, players can win upgrades to the location’s money production or environmental rating, and even free money, energy, and premium game dollars. Or you might get unlucky and not win anything. The wheel minigame provides a fun little reward for leveling up a town’s buildings.
Like other city builder games, players always have one or more missions to work on. Some involve erecting new businesses or houses, while others might have you purchase upgrades for buildings or clear out space for future developments. Standard stuff, but cute animations like people rushing to a store or celebrating with fireworks instill more personality than you might expect. Events like car crashes, fires, and floods also keep things lively while giving players more things to do.

Visiting friends

2020: My Country
Let’s face it. There is no point in pouring countless hours of your life into a city building game unless your friends can see what you’ve built. Luckily 2020 does not disappoint in that all-important area. The game allows you to build a friends list from both Game Insight’s servers and Facebook.
I believe that makes the social features platform agnostic, so Android, Apple, and Windows players should all be able to interact with each other. The only hitch is they actually have to accept your invites before you can visit them. Speaking of which, why not send me a friend request? My username is EastX.
After visiting a friend’s country and remarking at how much nicer yours is than hers, you can also interact with your friend’s buildings. Each time you select one, both you and your friend will gain money or XP for your trouble. You’ll also get social points, which contribute towards unlocking unique goodies for your town.
Finally, players can send one gift per day to each of their friends. Daily gifts include materials and even professional workers, all of which are quite handy. Get a few friends to play and you’ll have an easier time of things.

Keeping up with the clutter

2020: My Country
2020 gives players so many things to do and systems to manage that it can get confusing at times, especially early on. You’ll go several levels before learning what some of the currencies and stats do. The function of the electricity and ecology stats in particular was a mystery until I discovered that some buildings require sufficient power or greenery in order to be constructed.
On the other hand, the game does have a few graphical options that will allow players to cut down on the visual stimulation a bit. You can adjust the pedestrian density from high to low to off, and even turn buildings completely off. Doing the latter will replace buildings with colored panels, which can also be handy just for taking stock of your country or cutting down on clutter. These options should also help 2020run better on low-end devices.

Currencies and energy

2020: My Country
The currency and In-App Purchase (IAP) systems can add to player confusion as well. 2020 has too many currencies going on for its own good: game dollars, country bucks, gold coins, reputation, and energy. Country bucks are the main premium currency; you can buy game dollars, gold coins, and energy with them. You can earn country bucks through gameplay, but they’re hard to come by.
Most processes in the game require energy to perform, whether it’s the actions that buildings offer, constructing a business, or speeding up a process’s completion time. The energy mechanic doesn’t annoy too greatly except for when you’re trying to earn a rare material from a building.
You might have to perform a building’s action ten or more times to find the part you need, which can easily drain more energy than your meter holds. In those instances, it might be tempting to just buy the rare item with country bucks.

Jump ahead a few years

2020: My Country
Will things be brighter in the year 2020? The latest My Country game seems to think so. A world with flying cars, friendly aliens, and donut shops doesn’t seem so bad. Not everybody cares for futuristic stuff though, so the game cleverly spreads them out as you play through the game. By the time you realize2020 actually happens in the future, you’re already hooked.
2020: My Country stands out from the crowd by offering a more fully-developed simulation than typical mobile games. It also packs a ton of content, with numerous missions, buildings, and ways to interact with those buildings. Like other free to play city builders, you’ll need to be able to stomach the time mechanics in order to enjoy this one past the tutorial phase. If you enjoy the genre, perhaps this one will keep you busy through the real year 2020 – or at least until the next sequel comes along.

Welcome Smartwatch Fans to the Mobile Nations family!

Smartwatch Fans!
Happy 2014! There is no better day to launch a new website than January 1st, so we're doing just that. Today we welcome Smartwatch Fans to the Mobile Nations family!!
We're incredibly excited to launch SmartwatchFans.com. We actually entered 2013 thinking it was the year we needed to go beyond phones and build a new "connected accessories" community to join the ranks of Android Central, CrackBerry, iMore and Windows Phone Central. As we discussed throughoutTalk Mobile 2013, mobile is about so much more than just phones these days. The problem is, with the "internet of things" growing so big, so fast and penetrating into every area of life, it's really hard to define the scope of where a new community like that would begin and end. As we've learned over the years, a successful tech community needs a focus.
JUST AS MOBILE NATIONS WAS THERE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SMARTPHONE ERA OVER A DECADE AGO, WE'VE BEEN PART OF THE MODERN SMARTWATCH ERA SINCE ITS EARLIEST BEGINNINGS TOO
With 2013 winding down and no new site launched yet, it was actually CrackBerry's Managing Editor Adam Zeis who lost patience with the indecisiveness and took the initiative and got the ball rolling with Smartwatch Fans. Thinking on it now, it was really a no brainer that our next community be focused on smartwatches. It just makes so much sense.
Just as Mobile Nations was there at the beginning of the smartphone era over a decade ago, we've been part of the modern smartwatch era since its earliest beginnings too. Most pundits look at Pebble's amazing Kickstarter debut in 2012 as the starting shot that set off the smartwatch race we're witnessing now. In reality, Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, was working on a version years earlier called the inPulse Smartwatch. And it was back on CrackBerry in 2009 that we worked with Eric to bring the first photos of the inPulse smartwatch to the world. Like I said, we've been thinking about smartwatches at Mobile Nations since the beginning. And even more important, we already have a bunch of watch fanatics on the team across our existing sites. We just needed a place to all get together.
Adam Zeis gets the honors of being Chief Smartwatch Fan and will be managing the daily beat on the blogs. With a lot of smartwatch fans on the team, you can also expect to see regular contributions from your other favorite Mobile Nations personalities. Expect to see many new faces too!
The site is already off to a great start and the forums are buzzing, so be sure to drop bySmartwatchFans.com and say hello!

Grand Opening Contest - Win a FREE Smartwatch of your choice from Smartwatch Fans!

Win a Smartwatch!
In true Mobile Nations fashion, to celebrate the launch of Smartwatch Fans we're kicking things off proper by holding a contest to win a free smartwatch of your choice. To enter, all you need to do is visit the contest post at the link below and tell us which smartwatch you'd like to win!
Take note, if you're already a member of Android Central, CrackBerry, iMore or Windows Phone Central, you can login to Smartwatch Fans with your existing username and info. If you're already logged in to one of our other sites, just jump over and click Login and you'll be registered on the fly. It's that easy.
